To see if you were affected, you can check this website and enter the email you use to log in to Facebook: Haveibeenpwned.com Think about all the personal data we put inside of our profiles: names, maiden names, place of employment, town/city we live in or are from, date of birth, family members, etc. Here are a few tips you can implement tonight to better safeguard you and your family from future data leaks:
1. Turn your location settings off through your Facebook app. First, turn off location through your cell phone, then through the app settings:
- Tap the icon with the three lines in the bottom right.
- Tap Settings & Privacy, followed by Privacy Shortcuts.
- Tap Manage Your Location Settings, followed by Location Services.
- Tap Location and select Never
2. Turn on Two-Factor Authentication so you’ll know if future hackers attempt to login to your account and obtain data about you from inside of your profile. Follow these steps to do this:
- Tap Settings & Privacy, followed by Settings.
- Select Security and Login.
- Scroll down to Two-Factor Authentication and tap Use two-factor authentication.
- Enter your phone number and confirm the code in the text to complete the setup.
