Facebook Data Breach

Did you hear about the recent data breach on Facebook? Over 533 million Facebook users had their data leaked. To see if you were affected, you can check this website and enter the email you use to log in to Facebook: Haveibeenpwned.com Think about all the personal data we put inside of our profiles: names, maiden names, place of employment, town/city we live in or are from, date of birth, family members, etc. Here are a few tips you can implement tonight to better safeguard you and your family from future data leaks:

 

1. Turn your location settings off through your Facebook app. First, turn off location through your cell phone, then through the app settings:

  • Tap the icon with the three lines in the bottom right.
  • Tap Settings & Privacy, followed by Privacy Shortcuts.
  • Tap Manage Your Location Settings, followed by Location Services.
  • Tap Location and select Never

 

2. Turn on Two-Factor Authentication so you’ll know if future hackers attempt to login to your account and obtain data about you from inside of your profile. Follow these steps to do this:

  • Tap Settings & Privacy, followed by Settings.
  • Select Security and Login.
  • Scroll down to Two-Factor Authentication and tap Use two-factor authentication.
  • Enter your phone number and confirm the code in the text to complete the setup.
